“I have Type 1 Bipolar Disorder. I was first diagnosed when at 21, but a confusing second opinion changed my mind.
At 25 a huge manic episode caused me to cross into psychosis. I spent an night in the ER, a week in a psychiatric ward and then a month at a treatment center. My family confronted my illness head on. I am beyond grateful for them.
This event was the single most difficult challenge I have ever faced, and also deeply transformative. I am happier now than I ever was untreated. On a daily basis I manage my illness with medicine, proper sleep, stress management, and a healthy lifestyle. I watch my alcohol intake, never do recreational drugs and check in with my psychiatrist and therapist regularly. I work in fashion and love mental health advocacy. I enjoy writing short stories about my experience to share with the world!
What happened to me is really common and treatable. I dream of making a big difference in the mental health community. My best advice is to build a strong relationship with your psychiatrist, that relationship is critical. Believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel, you can get better! I invite you to follow my personal/professional Instagram and my passion project ”
